Lowell Milken Centre for Unsung Heroes Discovery Award

Age limit: 9-18
A Project competition that provides students a unique opportunity to use their creative talents to research primary sources and develop outstanding projects that feature Unsung Heroes who can serve as role models and inspire others to create change.

The remarkable stories of Unsung Heroes go untold until YOU tell them. Now is your chance.

To be considered for a Discovery Award, project topics must:
1. Be about one Unsung Hero whose action made a profound and positive impact on history, but is largely unrecognized by contemporary generations
2. The actions which define the Unsung Hero's legacy as a role model must have occurred a minimum of 20 years in the past
3. Demonstrate the impact made over time as a result of the Unsung Hero's actions

Project Categories:
1. - Documentary film or multimedia (Example - Jacob Valentine: in additional links at the bottom, as with the other examples). Cannot exceed 12 minutes and must include:
o Primary source photographs
o A 500-word process paper
o An annotated bibliography, separating primary and secondary sources (Sources must be properly cited in the credits at the end of the film and in the annotated bibliography.)
2. Performance (Example - Walk with Me). Cannot exceed 12 minutes and must include:
o A 500-word process paper
o An annotated bibliography, separating primary and secondary sources (Sources must be properly cited in the annotated bibliography.)
o Portable props
3. Website (Example - We Are Newspapermen). Cannot exceed 1,200 student-composed words and 100 MB of file space. Must include:
o A continuous theme through every page
o A 500-word process paper
o An annotated bibliography, separating primary and secondary sources (Sources must be properly cited in the annotated bibliography with a link to the bibliography on the website.)

You need to be enrolled in a school to take part in this competition. There is no submission fee.

Prizes:
The recipients of the prize determine the use of the funds, which are unrestricted. All winning projects will be featured on the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes website.

" OUTSTANDING INTERNATIONAL PROJECT: $1,000
" OUTSTANDING HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT: $2,000
" OUTSTANDING MIDDLE SCHOOL PROJECT: $2,000
" OUTSTANDING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROJECT: $1,000
A certificate of recognition will be sent to projects with promise that did not place.
